The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of addiction medicine and clinical practices in a manner that allows the organization to excel and succeed in the future while ensuring clinical efficacy and exceptional quality of care. The CMO will collaborate with other leaders and staff to develop state-of-the-art treatment practices and innovative business strategies aimed to ensure the long-term health, financial sustainability, and overall viability of Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation per its mission and values. The CMO is responsible for developing and leading an engaged clinical team in operationalizing advanced clinical strategies with a continuous focus on outcomes, financial sustainability, safety, and quality improvement.   Leadership:  - Provide leadership and oversight in operationalizing key business initiatives and goals for clinical, medical and mental health care throughout the organization. - Promote and ensure the coordination of training, communication and standardization of care across the system by establishing clear goals and accountability for leaders and teams. - Ensure change management techniques are developed and included as part of the development and execution of an Annual Clinical Project Plan. - Sponsor or participate in National Clinical Practices Teams and Clinical Projects to provide expertise and decision making.  Ensure key deliverables are on track and address barriers, escalating as necessary. - Communicate “the why” for prioritized business initiatives, changes or improvements and ensure provider work processes and tools are at peak performance and innovative to support delivery of the best care.  Operate as a clinical change agent. - Translate broad strategies to clear objectives to create an Annual Clinical Project Plan. Include new and/or improvements to existing clinical methods and/or services.  Bridge gaps between management initiatives and clinical operational changes. - Own and warden the physician credentialing/privileging process and ensure execution of compliant Peer Review processes. - Partner with legal to establish, lead and manage expansions and existing corporate practice of medicine requirements as they relate to Hazelden Betty Ford and Recovery Partners. - Ensure clinical staff have complementary strengths, a wide scope of expertise, and continued opportunities to develop skills. - Champion physician partnership with nursing, case management, PECS or other internal partners as necessary. - Lead and facilitate collaboration and communications among regional clinical and medical leadership. - Partner with key stakeholders to ensure improved performance and physician engagement. Recovery: - Ensure quality and safety management for clinical operations throughout the organization. - Function as liaison to, and provide support for the Quality Committee of the Board. - Collaborate with Quality and Safety departments to evaluate improvement metrics and create routine analysis for system wide and practitioner level data were needed. - Champion Patient Centered Care through the evaluation of data.  Address gaps though follow up and make recommendations to address themes and patterns associated with patient feedback - Monitor and measure data related to patient documentation and medication controls that leverages technology and ensures regulations and best practices are routinely met or exceeded. - Champion Evidence Based Practices to ensure the quality and efficacy of outcomes are industry leading. - Anticipate, prevent, or remediate potential ethical and clinical conflicts in both medical and mental health practices. - Oversee the quality review function for the organization and insure the examination of sentinel events and the implementation of recommended changes and improvements to clinical services. Science: - Ensure integration of research, education and publishing into the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation clinical models to improve clinical practice and treatment effectiveness. - Define and ensure routine data collection and analysis to be aware and proactively address concerning trends or problems with patient satisfaction, quality, safety, care coordination or efficacy. Service:  - As needed, assess, diagnose and treat individuals’ mental disorders in accordance with established guidelines and provide consultation services to professional staff. - Conduct assessment interviews based on referral questions and input from referring mental health professionals. - Formulate clinical reports that include specific categories and content regarding history of current illness, psychiatric history, family background, medical history, social status, mental status exam, multiaxial diagnostic impressions, and treatment recommendations. - Reassess presenting symptoms and progress based on medication response, change in status, new information, and treatment response. - Generate diagnosis based on DSM IV-TR criteria. - Differentiate mental disorder from biomedical conditions and complications that present psychological symptoms. Defer biomedical issues, including withdrawal to facility medical unit. - Provide input regarding treatment alternatives and recommendations for continuing care. - Prescribe psychopharmacologic treatment and manage medication according to formulary guidelines. - Properly assess and reassess patients who have been prescribed psychopharmacological treatment. - Adhere to Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s clinical guidelines and practices regarding medication prescribing practices in the treatment of mental disorders.
